Yoga Nidra - Yoga Sleep
Yoga Nidra, translates as yoga sleep, and is my favourite guided meditation practice. It brings the body and mind into a state of deep conscious rest. It is typically practiced lying down in a comfortable position while you are gently guided through a systematic process of body awareness, breath observation, and mental imagery. Unlike regular sleep, Yoga Nidra allows you to remain consciously aware while the body enters a profound state of relaxation. This practice moves the nervous system from the active sympathetic state (fight-or-flight) into the restorative parasympathetic state (rest-and-digest), often producing a level of rest deeper than ordinary sleep in a much shorter time.
One of the unique aspects of Yoga Nidra is its ability to access the liminal space between waking and sleeping. This is the hypnagogic state, where the subconscious mind becomes more receptive. In this space, practitioners can experience deep emotional release, improved mental clarity, enhanced creativity, and profound insights. Regular practice is particularly supportive for anxiety, burnout, insomnia, trauma recovery, and life transitions such as perimenopause. It requires no physical effort or experience, making it accessible to almost everyone.
