Online Somatic Therapy, Does It Really Work?

One of the questions I am often asked is: can somatic therapy really work online? If the work is so deeply body-based, so dependent on presence and attunement, does something essential get lost through a screen?

It is a fair question. And the answer, in my experience, is yes, online somatic therapy not only works, but it also offers some genuine and perhaps surprising advantages.

The Body Is Always Present

The first thing worth understanding is that somatic therapy does not require physical proximity to be effective. The work happens inside the client's body, in their nervous system, their breath, their felt sense of sensation and presence. The therapist's role is to guide attention, track responses, and create the conditions of safety in which the body's own intelligence can begin to do what it knows how to do.

All of this is entirely possible through a screen. The quality of presence, attunement, and relational safety that makes somatic therapy effective is conveyed through the voice, the pace, and the quality of attention the therapist brings. And the client's body is right there, in the room with them.

The Advantage of Home

Here is something I have noticed working with clients online, there is a particular quality of ease that comes from being in your own space.

For people navigating trauma, burnout, or chronic nervous system dysregulation, the familiar environment of home can itself be a resource. You are on your own territory. Your own furniture, your own light, your own quiet. There is no travel, no waiting room, no unfamiliar space to navigate before the session even begins. Many clients find they settle more quickly and more deeply into the work online than they do in a new or unfamiliar environment, because the body is already at home before we begin.

This is particularly relevant in Embodied Processing, where the first and most important task of every session is establishing a felt sense of safety and resourcing. When a client is already in a familiar, comfortable environment, that foundation is often already partially in place.

What to Expect

How Online EP Sessions Work

Online sessions with me take place via Google Meet, a simple, secure video platform that requires no special software or technical knowledge. All you need is a device with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a private space where you will not be interrupted.

Before your first session I will ask you to think about your setup, a comfortable chair or the option to lie down, a blanket if you like, perhaps a glass of water nearby. The intention is to create a space that feels genuinely supported and comfortable like how you might settle in for a rest.

Sessions follow the same structure as in-person work, beginning with a gentle check-in and grounding, moving into resourcing and body awareness, and then working with whatever arises using EP techniques including pendulation, titration, and gentle somatic inquiry. The screen becomes a window rather than a barrier and most clients find that within a few minutes of beginning, the online format fades entirely into the background.

What You Will Need:

  • A device with a working camera and microphone, laptop, tablet, or phone all work well

  • A reliable internet connection

  • A private, comfortable space where you will not be interrupted for the duration of the session

  • Comfortable clothing, you may want to move, stretch, or lie down

  • A willingness to arrive

Privacy and Confidentiality

Everything shared in an online session is held with the same confidentiality as an in-person session. Google Meet uses end-to-end encryption and I do not record sessions without explicit consent. Your privacy and your sense of safety are my first priority in person and online.

Ready to Begin?

If you have been curious about somatic therapy but uncertain about whether online sessions would work for you I hope this offers some reassurance. The most important thing is not where the session takes place but the quality of presence, safety, and genuine care that is brought to it.

I offer a free discovery call for anyone who would like to explore whether online somatic therapy might be the right support for them right now. No pressure, no obligation, just an unhurried conversation about where you are and what might help.

Somatic Therapy Sessions
from $130.00

Single Session: One session to begin exploring what it feels like to reconnect with your body. A gentle, no-pressure space, entirely at your own pace. Begin returning to your body, at your own pace, in your own time, no commitment.

Bundle of 3: Three sessions to settle in and go a little deeper. Many people find rhythm and familiarity start to build as they continue the process. Three sessions gives you room to explore, each session builds gently on the last.

Bundle of 8: The deeper work for those ready to commit to a longer journey. Eight sessions offer continuity and space for the kind of slower, more gradual work that many find meaningful. Real, lasting change lives in the body, and it takes time to get there.

Sessions are 60 minutes in duration, with approximately 50 minutes dedicated to the process. Before your first session, you’ll be invited to complete an intake form to share some background information, including your reasons for seeking support and any relevant aspects of your health and wellbeing.

Over time, some people report a greater sense of body awareness, improved capacity to respond to stress, and a deeper connection to themselves. Others may notice shifts in how they experience emotions, rest, or daily life.

These changes can unfold gradually and are not guaranteed. Sessions are available to purchase individually or in bundles of 3 or 8.
