I created this guide to share a little of what I have learnt about burnout through my own experience, though I didn’t recognise my own burnout at the time. In the years following the wildfire that took our home in Portugal, I moved through what I now understand was a profound and sustained period of burnout. I might have called it depression. I might have called it adrenal fatigue, or exhaustion, or simply the weight of everything that had happened.
At that time I did not have the framework, or the understanding to know what was actually happening in my body and my nervous system. I did not know that it was physiological and that my nervous system was depleted in a very specific way. I did not know that there were practices, and ways of understanding the body that could have offered genuine support during those years.
I wanted to to offer understanding, language, and simple somatic practices to anyone who is in the middle of something difficult and does not yet have the words for what it is.
If you are reading this and something feels familiar this guide is for you.
Take what's useful. Leave what isn't. And be gentle with yourself.
You deserve to feel at home in your body again.
